Terraced Tower | Gowanus Canal

Much like the Earth’s growing population and desire to improve, a tower symbolizes this upward growth, sprouting out of the ground almost as though it were a plant in bloom. The design operation draws from the rotative notion of progress and twists the building in such a way that forms staggered terraces and seamlessly integrates interior and exterior space. The torsion within the building appears to stem from within the landscape and context of the train bridge, mirroring this effect of rotation. We begin our design with a monolithic representation of a tower, working from base, to shaft, to top, drawing the user seamlessly through a series of interesting and inspiring spaces. The base extends atop a ramped plinth, where retail will occupy the space within, and exterior public leisure space will sit atop, allowing an ascent to the next level of the tower in the form of a beautifully landscaped patio.
